Woman of Rome

Lily Tuck, who won the National Book Award in 2004 for her novel THE NEWS FROM PARAGUAY, captures the tempestuous life of Italian novelist Elsa Morante in this vivid biography. Morante was a journalist and occasional prostitute before she met her husband, the novelist Alberto Moravia, who introduced her to Rome`s intelligentsia. The couple, both Jewish, hid in southern Italy during WWII to avoid capture by the Fascists. After the war, Morante would write her most famous works, including HOUSE OF LIARS and HISTORY, which led to her worldwide acclaim. Tuck skillfully depicts a fiery and independent woman who was not afraid to defy the powers of fascism nor to offend leftist critics with her denunciation of their overzealous ideological stances.
